Olivet, MI - The Tigers traveled to The University of Olivet on a windy, chilly Tuesday to face the Comets in a single 9-inning midweek matchup. In last year's contest, Olivet outlasted Grace 6-2. But the Tigers had different ideas this year.
The game did not start as planned as the Comets scored 5 runs in the first two innings to jump out 5-0. Grace responded in the top of the 3rd inning with 5 runs of their own, thanks to
Damian Fernandez,
Reagan Mutschler, and
Royce Frieburger who all tallied RBI's in the inning.
Matt Hoonhorst stepped on the mound in relief for Grace and fired 2.1 quality innings, keeping the score within 2 runs as he departed.
Down 8-5 in the 6th, the Tigers struck again with another huge inning offensively.
Caleb Achatz,
Jared Garnaat,
Damian Fernandez, and
Reagan Mutschler all came through with RBI hits in the inning to go along with a sacrifice fly from
Alex Bonnema. Grace would pick up one more run in the 8th to bring their lead to 12-8.
Brendan Bos came in to pitch for Hoonhorst and had a stellar outing, going 4.2 innings of one hit baseball to take the Tigers to the finish line.
Other notable performances in the game were
Dale Westphal who went 2-4, and
Aiden Benson and
Eric Whiting who each had 2 stolen bases on the day.
Grace Christian faces another MIAA opponent this weekend with games currently schedule for Friday and Saturday. Stay tuned for any changes due to inclement weather.
