Wyoming, MI - The Grace Christian University Tigers were a point away from a signature win Monday evening at the Aldrich Athletic Center. Despite holding a lead with 1:20 remaining in the game, the Tigers would suffer a one-point loss to the NAIA DII Cornerstone University Golden Eagles.
It took the Tigers a couple minutes to get settled in, with Cornerstone developing a 10-0 lead to start the game. Grace would recover and trim the lead to 7 to head into the halftime break. A huge third quarter would give the Tigers a three point advantage headed into the fourth, after outscoring the Golden Eagles 19-9. The final quarter was action packed with multiple lead changes, but Cornerstone was able to escape with the road win after a couple big plays down the stretch.
Freshman
Bre Harris stuffed the stat sheet with 19 points, 6 rebounds, 5 assists, and 5 steals.
Miranda Carlson and
Megan Scholtens rounded out the Tigers in double-figure scoring with 12 and 10 points, respectively.
"Bottom line, we got better tonight," commented Head Coach
CB Long, who was very pleased with his team's effort and evident growth. "We did so without having time to practice with our 3rd game in 4 days and the one day of rest being a Sunday. That tells me we are becoming mentally stronger - fitting our mission statement that starts with 'women of strength!' I couldn't be more proud of our ladies. Honestly this was a victory, it was another stop closer to our goal. Dream...struggle....victory. Right now we rejoice in the fact that we have a dream. And that we are in the struggle - which when done right, leads to victory!"
Grace is back in action this afternoon on the eastside of the state at 4:00 pm against Oakland University (NCAA DI). This will be the second NCAA DI opponent in the last 5 days, and the second NCAA DI game ever played by the women's basketball program.
