Adrian, MI – The Grace Christian University men's basketball team bounced back from their first loss over the weekend in a big way with an 86-83 road win over Siena Heights University, a team that received votes in the preseason NAIA DII Top 25 poll.
The Tigers led 38-35 at the halftime break, but a run from the Saints midway through the second half would put the Tigers down 10 points with 6:30 remaining in the game. The Tigers then would methodically chip away at the lead for the next five minutes and seniors
Adam Kregel and
Brandon Winchester-Jones made some huge plays in the final minute to solidify the win. Down one with 1:00 remaining, Kregel knocked down a pull-up three-point shot to give the Tigers a one point lead. The Saints would knock down two free throws at the other end to recapture the lead, and Winchester-Jones subsequently drove and finished the eventual game winning basket on the next possession. A defensive stop and two free throws from Kregel concluded the game.
Winchester-Jones led the Tigers with 22 points, followed by senior
Austin Jackson with 21 and Kregel with 20. Winchester-Jones also dished out a team-high 6 assists, and Jackson pulled down a team-high 8 rebounds. Junior
Kierson Watts provided a spark off the bench with 9 points and 5 rebounds.
Next up for the Tigers is a challenging game against local NAIA powerhouse Cornerstone University, who just knocked off NAIA #1 Spring Arbor University this past Saturday. The game tips at 8:00 pm Friday across town in Grand Rapids at Cornerstone.
