Louisville, KY/Cincinnati, OH – It was a solid 175 minutes of soccer played by the Grace Christian University men's soccer team over the weekend, as they defeated regional foe Boyce College 8-1 on Friday but fell to Cincinnati Christian University (NAIA) 4-1 after a lackluster final 5 minutes of the game on Saturday.
After 20 minutes of play,
Jared Farnsworth got things started for the Tigers, and
Tobias Jones followed that up with two quick goals in the next few minutes. Jones ended up recording a hat-trick along with an assist, and fellow first-year starter
Brett Arnold recorded one goal and two assists. Sophomore
Zak TerMeer also contributed two assists.
Sean McCarthy would score for the first time in his career to cap off the 8-1 Grace victory. The Tigers out-shot the Bulldogs 35-5 and held an 11-1 advantage on corner kicks.
Saturday's game with the Cincinnati Christian Eagles proved to be very competitive throughout, with the Eagles holding a 1-0 lead by a thread for a majority of the game. At the 84:00 mark,
Franklin Rodriguez-Arias scored on an assist from
Zak TerMeer to knot things up at 1-1 and all things pointing to overtime or an instant-classic finish between the two evenly-matched squads. Unfortunately for the Tigers, the Eagles went on a rampage and were firing on all cylinders, scoring three goals in the final five minutes of play to secure a 4-1 victory.
"Overall, it was a positive weekend for us," said Grace Head Coach
Dustin Buchanan. "We knew going into Boyce, a regional opponent receiving votes, was a game we needed to be focused on and ready for and we were just that. We played with a good energy and
Tobias Jones played fantastic. We were sound defensively and unlucky to concede a late goal on a penalty. We were able to use our quality in depth to stay fresh for Saturday's match against a strong Cincinnati Christian side. At 1-1 in the 85
th minute we made some key mistakes giving up a penalty and a set piece which they scored both.
Drew Steensma played well for us and Franklin Rodriguez Arias has now scored in three straight games which is great for him and our team. We grow with each performance, and this is a testament to the team's attitude, desire and work rate."
The Tigers, now 5-4 on the season, return to Velting Field for two home games this upcoming weekend. Friday they take on regional opponent Appalachian Bible College at 2:00 pm and Saturday they face Emmaus Bible College at 2:30 pm.
