Kissimmee, FL – The Grace Christian University men's soccer team lost a heartbreaker Thursday evening to Pensacola Christian College, falling 3-1 to the #3 seeded Eagles. Though the game ended 3-1, the game was intense until the end with both teams aware of the fact that Grace would advance to the National Championship game Saturday afternoon even with a loss if they were able to put in one more goal in the second half.
Sophomore
Zak TerMeer started things off early for the Tigers, scoring less than 10 minutes into the game to give Grace a 1-0 lead and a sizeable advantage considering the circumstances. The Eagles then put two goals in before the halftime buzzer sounded. Even with a 2-1 advantage, the Tigers could still earn their bid to the title game if the score remained the same, but the Eagles were awarded a PK for a handball after 10 minutes of play in the second half and they connected on it to extend their lead. After securing the 3-1 lead, the Eagles held strong and stalled late in the game to finalize the victory and their spot in Saturday's final.
Though they fell short of their ultimate goal, Head Coach
Dustin Buchanan and the Tigers finish their fantastic 2020 campaign with a 9-3 record, a Regional Championship, and likely will finish as the #3 team in the NCCAA DII.
Individual NCCAA awards (All-Americans, Scholar-Athletes, etc) will be announced after the conclusion of the tournament.
