Mount Hope, WV – The Grace Christian University volleyball team couldn't have started the season much better than they did over labor day weekend on the road in West Virginia and Kentucky. They kicked off the 2020 season with 2 straight set victories at Appalachian Bible College, and followed up with 2 more straight set victories at Alice Lloyd College, one over Appalachian once again and one over the host school Alice Lloyd.

Tori Johnston needed only 2 assists to surpass Aubree Domsic's school record of 1,677 career assists, and she did that within minutes, eventually recording 58 assists in the first two matches combined. Ashley Hoek led the Tigers with 32 kills and 9 blocks in the first two matches, while Megan Postma followed with 17 kills and 4 blocks.  Dani Tanner led the Tigers with 7 aces, and freshman Kenna Grant had a team-high 20 digs followed by 16 from Abby Summerfield.

Statistics from the second two matches are still being processed by Alice Lloyd College.

Head Coach Kerri Shultz spoke about the weekend and the success on the court and fun off the court.

"I am so proud of the team and how well we executed our offense and defensive strategies that we've only had a couple weeks to practice. Even more so the attitude on the team and how we stayed focused on our game and had grateful hearts. We made a lot of memories this weekend that are one of a kind, mainly taking a half day hike in Kentucky. We are looking forward to playing again in a few days!"

With this being the first official volleyball events amidst COVID, Shultz also mentioned that safety protocols were implemented and it took some adjusting, but overall everything went very smooth.

The Tigers travel to Maranatha Baptist University on Saturday for two matches against the Sabercats. This will be a great match-up to tune in to, as the Sabercats are mainstays in the NCCAA Top 10 and have been known to be contenders on a national level year in and year out.
