Wyoming, MI – In their second weekend of the year with multiple games, the Grace Christian University men's basketball team emulated their first at the John F. Bailey Classic, as they won one and lost one against NCCAA opponents Welch College (TN) and Boyce College (KY).
The Tigers started strong Friday night against the Welch Flames, jumping out to a 50-25 lead at the halftime break after handling the defensive pressure and creating easy baskets for big man
Jarius Shumpert who shot 10-10 in the first half for 20 points. Head Coach
Gary Bailey and the Grace coaching staff was able to see multiple different line-ups in the second half as the Tigers maintained their comfortable lead throughout and finished with an 85-64 victory.
Shumpert finished with a team-high 22, followed by
Kellum Bridgeforth with 17.
Saturday afternoon the Tigers faced Boyce College a day after the Bulldogs fell to Great Lakes Christian College in the final seconds of an impressive first outing at the JFB Classic on Friday night. The Bulldogs were able to match their quality performance and record their first ever victory over the Tigers, prevailing 72-63.
Shumpert and Bridgeforth led the Tigers again with 14 points each. Both were named to the All-Classic team.
Next up for Grace is a match-up across town against Calvin University Tuesday at 7:30 pm at Calvin's Van Noord Arena.
