Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Late surge not enough for Tigers in NCCAA DII Third Place Game

Joplin, MO – Though they didn't find themselves in the Championship game Saturday afternoon, the Grace Christian University women's basketball team looked to end the season on a high in the third place game. They were presented with the challenge of defeating a very talented Pensacola Christian College team, who carried the #2 seed into this year's tournament.

Almost inevitably after both teams experienced a high-paced final four game less than 24 hours prior, to start the game they each struggled to find a basket, with the first points of the game occurring after four minutes of play. Pensacola would eventually find a rhythm, building a 16-9 lead to end the first quarter and extending their lead to 37-23 at the half.

The Tigers started the second half with a stop and a basket to trim things to 37-25, but from then on the Eagles of Pensacola Christian would not budge until the fourth quarter, when the Tigers put together one final push to trim the lead to five points with under 2:00 remaining in the game. Unfortunately for the Tigers, the Eagles were able to knock down their free throws down the stretch and would go home with a 71–64 victory.

Bre Van Vleet flirted with a non-traditional triple double, finishing with 14 points, 13 rebounds, and 7 steals. Emily Libey led the Tigers with 17 points. Ashley Hoek added 12 points and 13 rebounds. Megan George had 8 points, 5 rebounds, and 4 assists to cap off a solid tournament overall as an All-Tournament team selection.

The Tigers finish their 2020-21 season 10-15 and will bring home the NCCAA DII fourth place plaque.
