Kissimmee, FL - The Grace Christian University's Men's Soccer team ended their season this week in the NCCAA DII Men's Soccer National Championship held at Austin-Tindell Sports Complex in Kissimmee, FL. The Tigers played two hard-fought battles before bowing out of their second consecutive National Championship appearance.
The first match for Grace was against #5 seed Southwestern Adventist University, which remained scoreless through the first half. It would be the Knights to score first in the 60th minute to go up 1-0. Grace would respond with an equalizer from
Nathan Davis, assisted by
Ryan Cronkright in the 80th minute. 1-1 would remain the final score of this one, resulting in a tie for the Tigers' first match of pool play.
Grace's second match against the #1 seed Pensacola Christian College, originally scheduled for Thursday at 5pm, was postponed until Friday morning due to rain. The Tigers tied the Eagles earlier this season 2-2, and a win this time would send Grace to the title game. A loss however, would send the losing team home. Pensacola took an early 2-0 lead and held that score heading into halftime. The Tigers needed to respond in the second half to keep their season alive. In the 57th minute, Grace notched their first goal from a penalty kick by Nate Davis. Not much later, Davis would score off yet another penalty kick, bringing the score to 2-2. However, the Eagles were able to squeak in one last goal at the 87th minute, claiming the victory 3-2.
Grace Christian finished their 2023 campaign with a 7-8-5 overall record. The Tigers had a young squad this year, and Coach Buchanan is proud of their accomplishments despite some adversity faced throughout the season. "We played our best soccer at the end of the season, when it mattered most," said Coach Buchanan. "It's always heartbreaking to end the season being so close to the final goal, but I'm happy with the direction this team is heading. We have some really talented players returning next year, and we expect nothing less than to be here again next year."
