Wyoming, MI - The Grace Christian baseball team hosted the Warriors of Rochester Christian University on Saturday, October 5th for a double header. The previous time these two teams met was last fall when Grace hosted the games at LMCU Ballpark. In that meeting, the Warriors took both games by scores of 5-3 and 8-3. This time things shaped out a bit differently.
Game one started out hot with Tigers' starting pitcher
Matt Hoonhorst firing a 1-2-3 first inning. However, things took a turn for the worse in the second inning when Rochester tallied 5 runs to take a strong lead. The Warriors never looked back, scoring 6 more in the fourth, 4 more in the sixth, and a final run in the seventh to bring their total to 16. The Tigers couldn't find any momentum offensively and would end up dropping game one by a final score of 16-0.Â
Grace rallied back for game two, however, with sophomore
Joe Leavitt taking the mound. Leavitt held the Warriors to just 2 runs over 5 innings of work. The Tigers finally got the bats working again in this game, scoring 2 runs in the second inning off with an RBI single by
Caleb Achatz. Grace hung a 5 spot of their own in the third, coming from 2-RBI knocks from both
Royce Frieburger and
Jaden Schoeneman, and another RBI double from
Caleb Achatz. Grace added another 2 runs in the fourth with an RBI single from
Eric Whiting, bringing their total to 9. That proved to be enough as the Tigers took the nightcap by a score of 9-5.Â
On the day,
Eric Whiting, Brayden Chavies, and
Jared Garnaat all collected two hits a piece, while
Royce Frieburger led the way with three RBI. Brayden Chavies and
Damian Fernandez each stole three bases on the day as well.Â
"Game one I think the team came out tight as we have high expectations for ourselves this year," said Head Coach
Colton Wolfe after the games. "It shows a lot of toughness though that the team was able to bounce back in twenty minutes and reset to win the next game. Game two definitely showed more of what our guys are able to do on a consistent basis."
Grace will take a week off of games before they conclude their fall season with a 4-game home series against Sault College out of Canada on October 18th and 19th.Â
