Spring Arbor, MI - The Grace Christian Baseball team traveled to the middle of the state on Tuesday to face Spring Arbor University in a night game. Grace was coming off a seven game stretch on their spring break trip to Tennessee and Cincinnati, where they played very close ball games.
The offense got off to a slow start in the first three innings against the Cougars, while several defensive miscues resulted in an early 8 runs for Spring Arbor. In the fourth inning however,
Reagan Mutschler was able to drive
Jared Garnaat home for their first run of the game. Shortly after,
Royce Frieburger scored on a wild pitch. The following two innings remained scoreless for both teams, but the Tigers picked things up in the seventh as
Eric Whiting,
Sam Sipe,
Aiden Benson, and
Alex Bonnema crossed the plate.
Bonnema and Mutschler led the offense with two RBIs apiece. Grace was also able to collect four stolen bases on the night.
On the mound, the bullpen was able to shut down the Cougars' momentum, only allowing one run over the last six innings.
Brendan Bos recorded 3 strikeouts and gave up no runs over 2.2 innings,
Benji Kramer threw 2.0 innings only giving up one run, and
Haydon Koepke closed it out for the Tigers with one scoreless inning tossed.
The strong late game effort was not enough however to overcome Spring Arbor's early lead, and Grace fell by a final score of 6-9.
Tigers' Baseball returns to the field with their home opener at Kelloggwoods Park this Friday for a double header versus Community Christian College. Games are at 2pm and 4pm.
