Tigers Take A Chip Out Of The Chippewas

Mt. Pleasant, MI - The Tigers took on the NCAA DI Central Michigan University Chippewas on Monday afternoon in a midweek game in Mount Pleasant. Grace entered the game at 7-20 on the season, coming off a hot stretch winning 5 of their last 7 games.

The game started off with a bang as Jared Garnaat singled to the outfield on the first pitch of the game. The Tigers loaded the bases in the top of the first, but stranded them all. Sophomore, Matt Hoonhorst, started on the bump for the Tigers and fired a shutout inning as well to start the game.

After an error that led to several runs for the Chippewas, Grace entered the top of the fourth inning down 0-4. Carter Willis led off the inning with a scorching line drive to right field that bounced off the top of the fence and over for a solo homerun, bringing the score to 1-4.

CMU continued to score runs throughout the game off a mixture of hits and a few errors. It would take until the eighth inning for the Tigers to put more runs on the board. Royce Frieburger led off the inning with a single up the middle. Reagan Mutschler followed up with a single of his own, and Jaden Schoeneman drew a walk to load the bases. Carter Willis scored Frieburger on an RBI groundout, and then Tyler Thomas drove in Mutschler on a line drive to center field to bring the score to 3-19, where it would remain as the final for the day.

The Tigers threw a handful of pitchers in the game. Hoonhorst, Willis and Brendan Bos all threw innings with 0 ER. Joe Leavitt and John Green threw an inning each with just 1 ER given up.

"This game was a great experience for our guys, and a chance for them to compete against a team at the highest level in college baseball," said Coach Wolfe after the game. "Each game from this point on is preparing us for the postseason as we go into the second half of our season. I felt like the guys competed well today and didn't back down from the challenge."

The Tigers are heading into a 4 game homestand against Maranatha Baptist University this weekend at Kelloggwoods Park. Game times are scheduled for 2pm/5pm on Friday, and 12pm/3pm on Saturday.
