Barrien Springs, MI - The Grace Women's Soccer team earned their first victory of the 2024 season on Friday. The Tigers traveled to Barrien Springs to face the Cardinals of Andrews University.
In the first 15 minutes of the game, the dominant Tigers secured a 4-0 lead, which carried into halftime. They would score 3 more goals in the second half, earning a 7-0 victory over Andrews.Â
Freshman
Natalie Huerta led the Tigers with 3 goals and 1 assist, while
Jessica Calizo and
Abby Schwab each had 2 goals of their own.
Amiah Lake recorded 2 saves in goal.Â
"Until Friday all of our focus and energy has been in how to successfully defend as a team. It was great to finally get a game we could focus on the attack a little more," commented Coach Sean Wilson. "We have been defending amazingly well, playing with a very high work rate, and building our culture. So to finally be able to focus on the attack and get rewarded in the win column was huge for us and a great moment for all involved."
"Everyone played really well but to see Jessica get a couple was great and for Natalie to get a hat-trick we were very pleased. Amiah and the back line have really earned a better stat line than what shows so far in the season so to keep the clean sheet also meant a lot. I think it brings more energy for the rest of the season and gets us fired up to keep chasing our goals." - Coach Wilson
Following the victory, the women's soccer team will have this week off. They will then return to Velting Field on September 25 for a make up match against Ohio Christian University.Â
