Box Score 3 Lemont Furnace, PA - The Grace baseball team took a road trip to the greater Pittsburgh area for three games against Penn State satellite campuses. The first being a single 9 inning game against PSU - Greater Allegheny on Friday, and then a doubleheader against PSU - Fayette on Saturday before heading home.
Friday's game started in Grace's favor, with the Tigers going up to a quick 5-1 lead after the second inning. Senior
Kaleb Blaskowski had the start on the mound for the Tigers and came out of the game after 3.2 innings with a 5-4 lead. The Tiger's offense stalled for a bit, allowing the Nittany Lions to crawl back ahead, slowly going up 8-5 after 7 innings. in the top of the 8th, Grace loaded the bases but could only manage to push one run across, bringing the score to 6-8, which would end up being the final.
Damian Fernandez went 3-5 in the contest with two doubles, and
Dale Westphal went 2-4 with a walk.
On Saturday, the Tigers looked to rebound and finish the trip strong, and that they did. The bats came to life again early in the first game, with two triples and a home run all within the first two innings. Grace went ahead 9-3 early, but again allowed the opponent to hang around for a bit. When the score became 9-7, the Tigers pounced again to expand their lead back to 5, and then kept the foot on the gas, winning by a final of 15-9.
Freshman Fernando Alonzo Jr took the hill for Grace, throwing 4.2 innings with 4 strikeouts. Sophomore
Evan Snyder came on in relief, going the final 2.1 innings with 4 K's as well, earning the save.
Moises Lerma smashed the home run, and
Daniel Wallington and Damian Fernadez collected the triples. Dale Westpahl and Ryan Mullins each had doubles in the game as well.
The final game of the day also belonged to the Tigers, but not before they found themselves in a 0-4 hole after the first inning. It would be no matter for the offense however, as they boomed for a 10-run second inning, and never looked back. Pitcher Finn Mahoney settled in and Grace soared to the finish line, winning 22-5. Grace collected 18 hits in the game, with
Moises Lerma bagging 4, Justin Harphant getting 3, and Danny Wallington,
Dale Westphal,
Eric Whiting,
Damian Fernandez, and
Ben Anderson all earning 2 a piece. Finn Mahoney secured the decision on the mound, going 4.0 innings with 0 earned runs and 5K's, while
Moises Lerma and Reagan Gates also threw scoreless frames in relief.
Grace will be back in action for their final series of the fall season next weekend against Grace College (IN) on Friday and Saturday.
