Caledonia, MI - The Grace Christian University Track & Field teams had another strong showing at Davenport University this past weekend at the "Davenport Invite & Multis" meet. The term "multi event" in outdoor track and field refers to the decathlon (one male athlete competes in ten different events) or the heptathlon (one female athlete competes in seven different events). Temperatures for Friday's events were around the lower 50's with winds around 10-15 mph out of the north, whereas Saturday's weather was much more pleasant with highs by the afternoon reaching close to 60 degrees and winds much more calm.

Senior Kent Herring (Evart, MI) scored 4,031 points in the men's decathlon, ranking him 9th overall in the entire nation, and punching his ticket to the NCCAA Outdoor T&F National Championships next month in Columbia, South Carolina. Herring's overall effort was highlighted by new personal records in shot put (16 lb.) with an 8.86m throw and a new personal record in the 110m high hurdles in 19.96 seconds.

After breaking the school record in the 3k steeplechase last week at GVSU, freshman Ian Hinkle (Grand Ledge, MI) completely obliterated his own record by dropping an impressive 21 seconds and finishing with a new school record time of 10:53.03. This race put Hinkle within 18 seconds of the NCCAA automatic qualifying mark for the NCCAA Outdoor National Championships.
The track and field teams will be back in action this week at GVSU for the "Al Owens Classic" on Friday, April 18 and Saturday, April 19. Friday's events for the Tigers will be the hammer and javelin competition for throwers, starting at 10 AM. Most of the events will be on Saturday with both the remaining field events and all of the track events kicking off at 11 AM.
