Kentwood, MI - Grace Baseball hosted the Muskegon Community College Jayhawks on Tuesday afternoon for a chilly home opener, with the game time wind chill hovering at roughly 33 degrees. It would be a single 9-inning contest.
Strong pitching was the main story line for Grace as the Tigers supressed the Jayhawk bats all day. Senior
Jared Garnaat started on the mound for the Tigers and was effective, going 3.0 IP giving up only one run on 3 hits while collecting 3 strikeouts. Garnaat was followed up by
John Sanocki who went 2.0 IP with no runs given up on one hit and one strikeout. Sanocki was replaced with
Matt Hoonhorst, who also went 2.0 IP with no runs or hits allowed and one strikeout. The last two innings were soplit between seniors
Brendan Bos and
Adam Pierce who each did not allow a hit and each collected another strikeout each.Â
Offensively, the Tigers hit the ball well, earning 9 hits led by
Royce Frieburger who laced two doubles on the day. Also with two hits in the game was senior
Alex Bonnema. The real momentum for the offense was gained on the base paths as Grace stole 10 bases in the game, led by freshman
Aiden Pavlacka with a total of three.Â
Grace won the game 8-2 and hopes to carry the momentum into their home weekend series when they will host Wright State University - Lake Campus on Friday and Saturday. First pitch Friday is scheduled for 2:00pm at Kelloggwoods Park.Â
