Marion, IN - Despite a sluggish start that resulted in an 18-point deficit at the halftime break, the Grace Christian University men's basketball team found themselves a shot within taking the lead over NAIA #1 Indiana Wesleyan University after a huge second half surge Tuesday night on the road.
The Tigers scored at will in the first 10 minutes of the second half, as they put up a staggering 37 points in that time frame and put together a 21-3 run to trim IWU's lead to 2 points. The Tigers would struggle to get the stops they needed to get over the hump against the hot-shooting Wildcats for the rest of the game, who would catch fire in the waning minutes to pull away. The Wildcats shot 15-32 from the three-point line on the night and shot 60.6% overall compared to a 43.2% clip for the Tigers.
"I was really proud of the team tonight," commented Grace Head Coach Gary Bailey. "Our first away game of the season against a really great team and our guys battled all night. We had a three point shot rattle out to take the lead around the halfway point of the second half before the momentum shifted when they hit some deep threes. I really love the way our team played a full 40 minutes."
The Tigers had four scorers in double-digits, led by Caleb Anderson (SR/New Era, MI) with a season-high 16 points. Austin Jackson (JR/Kentwood, MI) and Marcus Chandler (SR/Grand Rapids, MI) followed with 12 apiece. Keoante Blackamore (JR/Dowagiac, MI) shot 3-3 from beyond the arc and finished with 11.
Grace moves to 3-1 on the year, and they return to the hardcourt for a big game across town at Calvin College on Thursday night.
