Wyoming, MI – The Grace women's basketball team welcomed Spring Arbor University to town Wednesday evening for their first ever home match-up against the Cougars. Though the Aldrich Athletic Center was absent of spectators, the competition remained intense from the beginning tip.
The Tigers started the game off hot, building a 17-8 lead with three minutes left in the first quarter after a three pointer from junior
Bre VanVleet. The momentum would shift at this point momentarily, as the Cougars closed in on the lead and would eventually take a 28-27 advantage to the halftime break. The third quarter was all cougars, as they knocked down six three-point shots and built their lead to as many as 17 points. The Tigers then flipped the switch in the final period, trimming their deficit all the way to four points in the waning moments of the game. After a couple missed shots and free throws for the Tigers, and made free throws by the Cougars, Spring Arbor would end up the victor, 69-61.
VanVleet led the Tigers in the box score with 22 points and a career-high 16 rebounds. Senior
Megan George followed with 17 points and junior
Ashley Hoek rounded out the Tigers in double-figures with 10 points to go along with 9 rebounds.
Grace, now 0-3 on the season after three tough NAIA games, will return to the court Friday at home against Welch College in their first NCCAA DII game of the season at 5:00 pm.
