Ankeny, IA – Thanks to a relatively quick golden goal from Aubrey Bristol in overtime, the Grace Christian University women's soccer team topped a very solid Faith Baptist Bible College opponent to finish their season opening road trip 2-0.
With both teams battling the rain, Jennie Sue Pilieci started things off for the Tigers 20 minutes in with her third goal of the season. The Eagles equalized the game at 1-1 right before halftime. An own goal would push the Eagles to a 2-1 lead, which they held until less than four minutes remaining in the game. At this point, Bristol scored on a laser shot to the opposite side of the Eagles keeper to knot things up. Within two minutes of the overtime period, Bristol drilled a very similar looking goal to lift the Tigers to the win.
Tigers Head Coach Mike Riemersma spoke after the big road win.
"What a match! It pretty much had every emotion you could think of. Faith has a really nice squad with some quality players. We didn't quite have it today. It was an uphill grind the whole way. In the first half we struggled to connect but found ourselves more in the second half. I really couldn't be more proud of the girls for hanging in there when it simply wasn't going our way. I've talked to the team about mental toughness and what it takes to win but until today I think it was just words. Today I think the light bulb went off and they understood what I was talking about. If you want to be a championship team you have to find ways to win when you are struggling. Not every game is going to be easy and you simply have to grind and find a way to get it done. Today we did that against a very good opponent and I'm hoping that it sets the tone moving forward for who we want to be. Like I said I couldn't the more proud. It was a really good win."
The Tigers return to action next Tuesday in their home opener against Trine University at 3:00 pm.
