Wyoming, MI - In their first action on Velting Field in 2020, the women's soccer squad faced a very talented Trine University team. The Trine Thunder struck first at the 10 minute mark and extended their lead to 3-0 at the half. The Tigers held strong for the majority of the final period, but allowed four late goals to result in a 7-0 setback.
The Tigers were not absent of chances, with three shots on the day and two on goal. Goalkeeper
Regan Befus had a season-high 11 saves for the Tigers.
Head Coach
Mike Riemersma was pleased and reflected upon how the game was beneficial despite the outcome.
"Today was a tough day," commented Riemersma. "I knew that Trine was going to have a very solid squad and that this game would be really tough for us. No one likes to lose big but it was more important to me to have the girls play a tough team to see how they would respond. You don't get better by playing teams that aren't as good as you. You get better by playing teams that are better than you. I was really pleased with how the team responded in the second half. I thought we defended as a team better and attacked more as a unit than as individuals. All I have ever asked from this team is that they give me effort. They did that today. We can learn a lot from this loss that will make us better as we move forward."
The Tigers move to 2-1 on the season.
Grace will have a 10-day hiatus from official competition, returning to the field on September 25 in Harrodsburg, KY against regional opponent Campbellsville-Harrodsburg. Their Kentucky road trip will conclude with a game on Saturday the 26
th against the University of Pikeville.
