Wyoming, MI – The Grace Christian University men's soccer team took on the Great Lakes Christian College Crusaders Wednesday evening, braving a steady downpour of rain at Velting Field in their last home game of the season. It has been 15 days since their last game action, and it was evident that they were itching to play, building a quick 8-0 advantage in the first half.
The Tigers were able to score 5 more times in the second half and Head Coach
Dustin Buchanan and staff were able to get the majority of their roster significant minutes before the final buzzer sounded - 26 players saw action in all.
"We were all looking forward to getting back out and playing," said Coach Buchanan. "The guys have been incredible and mentally strong through this year and this long layoff. The weather definitely did not help with things, but despite the conditions our guys were able to adjust and play a good brand of soccer.
Kendall Nieuwenhuis brought a real calm to the midfield today along with Ethan (DeWitt) and Zak (TerMeer). Dylan (DeVries) kept things composed in the back with the conditions. I was very happy for Franklin (Rodriguez Arias) who had an excellent game on senior day."
Sophomores
Zak TerMeer and
Brett Arnold led the Tigers with 2 goals and 2 assists each. Sophomore
Johann Vega and freshman
Payton Jeltema both notched 2 goals as well for the Tigers. Senior
Franklin Rodriguez-Arias, who was honored at halftime in his final game at Velting Field, finished the game with 1 goal and 2 assists.
The Tigers, now 2-1 on the season, hit the road Friday for their next game action, taking on Maranatha Baptist University in Watertown, WI on Saturday at 1:00 pm CST.
