The Grace Tigers men's JV basketball team started their 2021 calendar year with some excitement Monday night on the road against Campbellsville-Harrodsburg, taking part in a game that was back-and-forth throughout and needed overtime to determine the victor.
Â
With
Noah Johnston and Adam Reirick both fouling out in regulation, freshman Cam Staal had to come in and carry the load in the frontcourt for Grace – and that he did, to say the least. Staal went 6-6 from the field and none of his field goals were as important as one that passed through the net as time expired, giving the Tigers an 83-82 overtime win. Grace had possession down by one point with 1.1 seconds to go beneath the hoop, and Nate Blasko attracted just enough attention under the hoop to allow Staal to beautifully seal his defender and finish the game winner.
Â
"It felt great to get back on the court after nearly 2 months off," said Head Coach
Ryan Krombeen. "We certainly showed some rust and nerves as we didn't defend or take care of the ball as well as we would have hoped."
Â
Coach Krombeen went on to say how the bench was the difference maker in the game, with LaDarius Lyons,
Cory Dunn, and
Josiah Kenney all joining Staal in having clutch performances.
Â
Gerard Oray had 23 points and
Zane Draper had 17 points to lead the Tigers.
Â
The Tigers don't have much time to rest, as they are back in action against Asbury College (KY) today at 12:00 pm before the varsity take the court at 2:00 pm.
