Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Tigers drop two in GR-competition week

Wyoming, MI – The Grace Christian University men's basketball team welcomed two fellow Grand Rapids area opponents to their home gym on Tuesday and Wednesday, which naturally resulted in some packed bleachers at the Aldrich Athletic Center. The test would not be an easy one – as their opponents Cornerstone University and Aquinas College always are contenders in the competitive NAIA.

The Tigers would not have their best effort on Tuesday night, despite starting the game with a 9-2 lead. The size and rebounding advantage and shooting prowess for the Cornerstone Golden Eagles would prove to be too much, as they went away with a 103-65 win.

The first half of play would favor the Aquinas Saints on Wednesday evening, as they went into halftime with a 14-point advantage over the Tigers. The second half started slow for the Tigers as they fell behind 18, but the final 12 minutes of the game things started clicking and they stormed back to trim the lead to 1-point in the waning moments of the game. With the crowd rocking and all the momentum on the Tigers' side, the Saints were still able to calmly knock down clutch free throws in the end and two three-point shots from the Tigers on the final possession were off the mark, resulting in a 78-75 win for the Saints.

Kellum Bridgeforth has been coming into his own offensively, leading the Tigers both nights with 22 points on Tuesday and 26 on Wednesday to go along with a team high 10 rebounds. Jarius Shumpert found his groove on Wednesday and added 17 for the Tigers.

Next up for the Tigers, who are now an even 8-8 on the year, is another home game against Oak Hills Christian next Tuesday at 1:00 pm before they travel late next week to Nashville, Tennessee.
