Grand Rapids, MI - The men's basketball team traveled across town to Aquinas College to face the Saints on Wednesday night. Coming off a landslide victory against Andrews University on Tuesday, the Tigers were feeling confident.
Grace started off well, leading the game 18-17 through the first 8 minutes, however Aquinas' rebounding and shooting percentage began to prevail as the Saints jumped out to an 8 point lead at half, 45-37. The second half saw the same trends, and though the Tigers always kept the score within reach, Aquinas slowly crept forward with their lead. After a last minute push, Grace finally fell by a final of 75-89.
Overall Grace shot 42% from the field compared to Aquinas' 58%. The Saints also won the rebounding battle 38-25. These seemed to be the difference makers in the game.
Melvin Frazier and
Ty Thiel led the charge offensively for the Tigers with 16 points a piece, Thiel going a perfect 4-4 from three-point range.
Zac Yorke led the team in rebounds with 6, and Frazier led in assists with 5.
"Defense lost us the game tonight," Coach Krombeen stated afterwards. "We didn't put enough pressure on shooters, allowed our man to cut behind us and lacked communication overall. We did do some things well offensively, but you've got to be good on both sides of the ball to beat a good team like Aquinas."
Up next, the Tigers will host the Flames of Welch College on Monday night at 5pm in the Aldrich Athletic Center. As Grace exits their tough early season schedule, they hope to catch a winning streak against primarily NCCAA opponents coming up.
