Box Score Lansing, MI - The Grace Christian Women's Basketball team fell to rival Great Lakes Christian College in heartbreaking overtime on Tuesday evening.
The Tigers started out slow, going into halftime down 27-35, but would begin cutting into their lead in the third quarter, ending in a 42-42 tie. Grace would pull ahead 51-46 with 5 minutes to play in the final quarter. With a minute and a half to play, Great Lakes hit a 3 to gain a 1 point lead. At the 20 second mark, freshman
Sierra Fonseca would answer with a 3 of her own, putting the Tigers up 56-54. A final shot by the Crusaders would tie it up 56-56, sending the game into overtime.
Great Lakes held on to the lead throughout overtime and would come away with a 64-60 victory over the Tigers. Fonseca led the Tigers with 23 points, while
Rayah Helenhouse had a career-high 14 points and 10 rebounds, recording her first double double of the season.
Emilee Klacking chipped in 11 points, 8 rebounds, and 8 assists.
"The girls battled tonight. I'm so proud of this team's commitment to continued hard work and resilience," said Coach Graham after the game. "While we didn't get the result that we wanted tonight, we're excited about the future of this program and are ready to compete again tomorrow night against Maranatha. These young kids grew up tonight and now the challenge is to sustain it moving forward."
Up next for the Tigers is another NCCAA match up against Maranatha Baptist University on Thursday, January 16. Tip-off is 5pm, with the men's game to follow.
