Toccoa Falls, GA/Knoxville, TN – In what was described as a "wonderful trip" by Head Coach
Dustin Buchanan, the Grace Christian University men's soccer team enjoyed a trip along with the women's team to the Smokey Mountains area of Georgia and Tennessee for two big NCCAA DII games.
A 7-0 win would start the weekend off for the Tigers at Toccoa Falls College – the first match-up in recent history between the two teams.
Zak TerMeer had three assists for the Tigers and
Brett Arnold recorded two goals and an assist.
Jared Farnsworth added two goals. Senior defender
Dylan DeVries got in on the action with a goal and an assist, and
Johann Vega also pitched in a goal and an assist.
Saturday's game would be a rematch of the 2019 Mideast Regional Championship, as the Tigers traveled to Knoxville, TN for a game against the Johnson University-Tennessee Royals.
Jared Farnsworth and
Johann Vega scored for Grace in the first half to give them a 2-0 advantage into the halftime break. The Tigers had chances in the final period but struggled to finish, and a late goal by the Royals would trim the Tigers lead to 2-1 with only minutes remaining. Goalkeeper
Levi Pant and the defense held strong for the remainder of the game to solidify the victory.
"This week was a good test for us as it was the first time we have played three games in a week all year and did not have a two week break between games mixed in with a good amount of travel," said Grace Head Coach
Dustin Buchanan. "Friday we did not show any signs of rust or fatigue for the match against Toccoa. The guys played well and really took care of business. I was pleased about nearly everything in that match. The Johnson match was a bit different. We played well, but lacked a bit, uncharacteristically, in the final third. We created plenty of chances missing the opportunities to make it 3 or 4 before halftime. Overall, good first half. The second started very strong for us with chance after chance. We just could not capitalize. We carried the 2-0 lead well, even dealing well with going a man down. To their credit, guys stayed strong and saw out the victory at 2-1. This entire weekend was a wonderful experience for us. The way these guys carry themselves and go about their business, I forget at times how young we are starting only two upperclassmen."
Now sitting at 6-1 on the year, the Tigers return right back to Knoxville the weekend after next, facing defending NCCAA DII National Champion Pensacola Christian College on Friday, October 30, and then Johnson University-Tennessee once again on October 31. NCCAA DII Mideast Regional play will take place the first weekend in November, also taking place in Knoxville, TN.
"This past weekend will be very good for us going forward as Tennessee will basically be our home away from home from here on out this year," said Buchanan.
