Wyoming, MI – The Tigers welcomed Indiana Wesleyan University to town Tuesday night, and the Wildcats of IWU displayed why they are the defending NAIA DII National Champs, downing Grace 104-74.
The Tigers could not buy a basket to start the game, while the Wildcats came out firing on all cylinders to build a 16-0 lead to start the game. Grace was able to trim the lead momentarily with some solid play from their second group, but another big run from IWU to finish the half would give them a 28 point advantage. They outscored the Tigers by two in the second half to result in the 104-74 final. The hot-shooting Wildcats shot a staggering 15-29 from the three-point line, while the Tigers only connected on 9 of 33 attempts.
"When you play a great team like Indiana Wesleyan you cannot spot them a 16-0 lead and expect to do well," commented Grace Head Coach
Gary Bailey. "It was a little like a boxing match, as they come out and drop a couple great punches and we just seemed dazed throughout the night."
Sophomore forward
Austin Jackson was the only Tiger in double figures with 14 points on the night. Both Jackson and junior
Bernard Smith added a team-high 6 rebounds. Junior guard
Matt Jensen led the Tigers with 5 assists.
Coach Bailey continued, "We are still a very young team so this will be very good for us. The guys were very upbeat in the locker room knowing that we didn't play well and that we can get a whole lot better."
Grace will return to the hardcourt next Friday against Grace College in Winona Lake, Indiana.
