Grayson, KY – Both the Grace men's and women's basketball teams faced Johnson University (TN) Thursday night in their first of three games at Kentucky Christian University, and both came away with wins. The women defeated the Royals 79-71 behind a 27 point outburst from freshman
Miranda Carlson, and then the men followed with a 96-77 victory on the back of some dominate play from their frontcourt in the paint.
The Lady Tigers had three players joining Carlson in double-figure scoring for the game;
McKenzie McCord with 19,
Baylee Draper 14, and
Kitty Yanik 13 (5-5 FG). McCord added a team-high 5 assists, while Yanik led the Tigers with 11 rebounds on the day. It was the first win over a ranked team in the NCCAA this season for the Lady Tigers, as the Royals came into the game ranked #7.
The Grace men would be up a slim margin (40-36) at halftime before allowing a quick run by Johnson University to give the lead back at the beginning of the second half. The Tigers then flipped the switch and played to their capability for the remainder of the game, resulting in the 19 point victory over the #5 ranked Royals.
Austin Jackson led Grace with 20 points, followed by 18 points off of the bench from
Adam Rayner.
Bernard Smith scored 17 to go along with 11 rebounds. Jackson, Rayner, and Smith's efficient play was a large contributing factor in the win as they shot a staggering 24-32 from the field combined.
The action continues Friday night, as the women take on the University of Valley Forge at 6 pm, and the guys will play the host Kentucky Christian at 8 pm. The games will be available to watch live,
