Grace Basketball closes out Florida trip 6-0

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 | Box Score 3 | Box Score 4 Kissimmee, FL – Both the Grace Christian University men's and women's basketball teams returned home Sunday after completing their sweep at the Johnson University Florida Classic with wins over Johnson University-Florida and Welch College on Friday night and Saturday afternoon.

The women's team was firing on all cylinders and is noticeably starting to hit a stride, developing large leads and winning by significant margins on Friday and Saturday. The final score on Friday against Johnson University- FL was 92-77 and the final on Saturday against Welch College was 95-54.

Individual and team stats are still in processing for Friday and Saturday and will be available soon.

Head Coach CB Long spoke on how the ladies finished up the trip in Florida.

"After what was an awesome trip, the ladies were ready to be back home - not because they didn't want to stay longer but because they had taken care of business, and were ready to move forward with the rest of the season.  I was proud of how we played together, came together and fought together as a team, as one.  This was a good trip for everyone, and it showed on the court.  After a rocky start, the ladies marched forward, up 20 against Johnson on Friday and up big against our regional foes Welch College."

Long added some words on accomplishments and standout performances that took place over the weekend.

"Brandy Weaver had a huge impact on the games on both Thursday and Friday, with her defense and consistency on offense.  Ashley Hoek was very close to having three triple doubles in points rebounds and block shots.  We discovered she is leading the nation in black shots at 69, even though I think she has had a few more than was documented.  Setting a new school record for most in a season, breaking her number from last year already. Seniors Miranda Carlson and Megan Scholtens also had a good week, shooting the ball with confidence from long range.  I will be happy if we can continue to build on what we have going. Now that we are back home, it's back to work!  So proud of our ladies, our coaches and our University, and a huge thank you to them all for a great opportunity!"

After the three-game streak, the Tigers now sit at 9-13 on the season and 4-0 in the NCCAA. They will return home for a tough test this Wednesday at the Aldrich Athletic Center against Cornerstone University at 7:00 pm.

As for the men, the host school Johnson University-Florida gave them all they could handle on Friday night, but the Tigers won a nail biter after some clutch plays down the stretch.  Senior Adam Kregel led the team with 27 points, knocking down 6-9 shots from beyond the arc, none more important than a clutch go-ahead three that tickled the twine with 35 seconds left in the game.  Fellow senior Austin Jackson had 23 points on the night, and took a charge on the possession after Kregel's three point shot to swing all the momentum in the Tigers' favor and ultimately allow them to secure the 91-88 win.

After grinding out the win Friday night, the Tigers came out blazing on Saturday, giving Head Coach Gary Bailey the ability to play all 16 players on the roster some quality minutes in the 103-59 win over Welch College.  Austin Jackson led the Tigers with 18 points, followed by Anthony Kaminski and Jason Long, who both had career-highs on the day with 14 points. Ty Robinson also joined the party with a career high 10 points.

"This was a great week for our guys," said Coach Gary Bailey.  "Not only going 3-0 on the weekend but having a chance to just spend some quality time together off the court. This was our first overnight stay the season which is really rare to this point in the season.  The south region is very good and I was happy with getting those two wins outside of the Mideast.  Playing Johnson in their own gym is always difficult. They shot it very well and we felt fortunate to get out of there with a win. It was good to use those three games weekend to prepare us for the regional tournament and hopefully the national tournament."

The Tigers move to 10-10 on the season and will have the next 10 days away from competition before another trip southeast to the US Virgin Islands for two games on January 24th and 25th.
